Creating an Event from your Business Page and Inviting People to the Event…

Creating an Event in Facebook for a company occasion such as Grand Opening, Open House, Seminar, etc. is great for ‘Top of Mind Awareness’; keep in mind though you will need to engage and follow-up with those that say they will be coming – don’t gauge your refreshments by the number saying they are coming on your Facebook Event – it is highly recommended you take them to another area online where they actually register so you can capture full information such as email and phone # and/or payment (Constant Contact, Event Bright, a page on your website, ex.)
Begin by Creating the Event from your Business Page, NOT your Personal Profile; Why? It provides a link to your Fan Page!! AND make sure you ’Use Facebook as YOURSELF’; Why? So you can invite your Friends!
Once you set the Event up you want to get the word out, before you actually publish the event you can ‘Select Guests’ OR after the event is published you can ‘Edit Event’ by clicking on the ‘wheel’ drop down
in the upper right corner of event page and then ‘Select Guests’. You will want to ‘Join’ your event, once you do it will enable an ‘Invite Friends’ tab in the upper right corner of event page that you can use to bring up your Friends list.
Here is the confusing part… you created the event from YOUR BUSINESS, but when you invite, you invite from YOU, it pulls from YOUR list of friends.
You can ‘Share Event’ by clicking the ‘wheel’ drop down; when you share it you can choose to post it on your timeline, your page(s), any groups you are a member of, a friend’s timeline or in a private message.
As the Event gets closer you can ‘Message Guests’ by clicking the ‘wheel’ drop down; send a reminder to those that say they are ‘Attending’, asking them to be sure to register; a, sure hope you can make it, to those that say they ‘Maybe Attending’; and a gentle nudge to those that have ‘Not Yet Replied’.

To Your Successful Event!!!
Facebook Enables Facial Recognition

Facebook is at it again…pushing the privacy line. Last December Facebook announced a new system ‘Facial Recognition’ that was being tested by limited users in North America; they began rolling out this feature globally in June. With the rollout Facebook is changing its users’ privacy settings to automatically turn on a facial recognition feature that detects a user’s face in an image. It is up to each user to opt out of the system, instead of having the choice to opt in. As always, Facebook, after the fact, realizes they should have been more clear with their sites users during the roll-out process when this became available to them.
What exactly is this ‘Facial Recognition’ feature and how can it affect you if you keep it enabled? Presently the site allows your friends to tag you in photos they publish to Facebook; if you are tagged in a photo you do not want to be tagged in you have to un-tag yourself by going to the photo and removing your name (There is no option to opt out of photo-tagging). With the new system your friends will be prompted with various images and once your face is detected Facebook will then encourage your friends to tag you in these photos. Many of the photos could be photos you had removed your tag from or possibly photos you had avoided being tagged in for various reasons. With the ‘Facial Recognition’ system Facebook can now use billions of photos its users’ have uploaded to build a facial fingerprint database.
As creepy as this may sound facial recognition is not new technology. Your local DMV has a photo database that is linked to people’s identities and has used facial recognition to prevent identity theft, additionally facial recognition has been incorporated in digital billboards to target relevant advertising, not actually identifying you but being able to identify individuals by gender; for instance a woman walks by one of these digital signs, she might see a lipstick ad, a man walks by, it changes to a Beer ad.
So how do you turn off the Facebook setting if you don’t want your name to be suggested? It’s not easy to find… To disable the feature, click ACCOUNT in the top blue menu bar, click PRIVACY SETTINGS, under SHARING ON FACEBOOK click CUSTOMIZE SETTINGS link, scroll down to THINGS OTHERS SHARE, click on EDIT SETTINGS tab to the right of SUGGEST PHOTOS OF ME TO FRIENDS, click the tab ENABLED and check DISABLED, then click OKAY (If the setting is not yet visible it means facial recognition is not yet turned on).

Facebook is notorious for automatically opting users into new product releases without their knowledge, privacy experts feel Facebook should introduce new products by asking users if they would like to join rather than automatically signing them up without their knowledge. I’d love to know your thoughts.
Facebook Business Page vs Personal Profile

There seems to be some confusion about how to set up your business on Facebook. Some folks set up their actual profile account in their business name which is against Facebook’s terms and conditions (read 1-4 under Registration and Account Security) and in so doing, risk having their account removed. That could be a hardship if you have built up a hefty friend list that you are engaging with. But there is good news, Facebook recently put into place a way for you to migrate your personal profile into a business page. When so doing, your profile picture and all your friends will move to your business page, however all other content on your profile will be lost so it is recommended that you go into your account settings and download your profile before migrating. You will use the same email and password to login to your account after it becomes a business page and you will no longer have a personal profile. For more information visit Facebook’s Help Center.
You may be wondering what the benefits are to having a Business Page vs a Personal Profile. The biggie is that you can have unlimited ‘Likes’ (fans and pages) compared to only having 5000 connections (combination of friends and pages you like) on your personal profile which can be very limiting to growing your business. Other features on a business page are the many business applications that you can download and begin using to enhance and promote areas of your business, customizing pages such as a ‘Welcome’ page which can make you stand out above your competition and assist with lead capture, run ads and/or campaigns plus, it is the only feature on Facebook that Google indexes.
Yes it is more difficult to connect with individuals on a Business Page vs a Personal Profile because you need to attract people and pages to come ‘Like’ your page whereas on a personal profile you request friends and you go ‘Like’ pages; I believe that is the main reason businesses create their business as a personal profile. But when they do so they not only risk, as I mentioned above, being removed from Facebook but they also risk offending others because it is obvious the only reason they are on Facebook is to promote their business. Facebook is a Social Networking site and people are on there to have fun, talk with people and choose who they want to do business with. That’s why they go ‘Like’ a page, they expect to be marketed to, but they also expect the business to provide them value.
